Featured is an As of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, who, like his predecessor Hadian, visited Britain and built a wall, the Antonine Wall, which was located futher to the North than Hadrian's wall.
This particular coin shows an early depiction of Britannia on the reverse. This depiction was used as the influence for the modern depiction of Britannia on British coins, starting with the farthings and half-pennies of Charles II, introduced in 1672. These coins were struck in Britain in 154-155 A.D. during the Emperor's visit to Britain at a travelling mint that followed the emperor wherever he went. Highly desirable Roman coins with a tangible British connection.
