Spanish Dollar
Mexico was once part of Spain's vast American Empire, and during this time, Mexico, in common with many of Spain's silver-rich colonies, produced vast quantities of silver coinage, which were used globally as trade coins as well as for domestic consumption.
This type of coin was undeniably the first truly global currency, and was not only used as money in Spain and the Americas (including the future United States) but was accepted as far away as China. In earlier years, it had been the coin associated with piracy, as popularised by Long John Silver's parrot in Robert Louis Stephenson's famous Nobel 'Treasure Island'. Despite their widespread use and the vast numbers of them minted, they can be surprisingly difficult to get hold of.
