1780 Mozambique PM Countermarked Maria Theresa Thaler
By a decree of January 5th 1889, all foreign silver coinage circulating in Mozambique was to be countermarked with a crowned PM in a circle, and to eventually be replaced or exchanged for current Portuguese coinage when they were received at the public treasury. Quite a variety of different world coinage was marked in this way, and still survives. It provides a fascinating insight into numismatic history, and shows the type and variety of coinage circulating in the area at the time.
The coin we show here is a countermarked 1780 Maria Theresa Thaler, the specifications of which are shown on its own page, along with much more information.

Description
A circular punch mark, with the letters P.M. below a large crown, stamped centrally onto the neck of Maria Theresa. We have yet to check the thaler itself to try to find the date and mint of issue.
