These substantial Russian 5 Kopek coins were issued in the name of Nicholas I. Nicholas I had two older brothers. His eldest brother Alexander I, died unmarried and childless in 1825. His second eldest brother, Constantine, renounced the throne. However, many in Russia refused to accept this renunciation and thousands of soldiers and their officers assembled in the capital to demand that Constantine should accept the throne and refused to swear allegiance to Nicholas I.
This revolt, known as the Decembrist Revolt, was swiftly crushed, and the survivors deported to Siberia. However, this revolt convinced the new Tsar that Russia needed to be ruled with an iron fist in order to prevent Russia descending into anarchy and opposition to his rule. As a result, centralisation of power, censorship, and repression all increased during the course of his reign.
He did however, desire to abolish serfdom, but was afraid of alienating the nobility to carry this out, and it would be left to his son and successor, Alexander II, to finally abolish this final vestige of medieval feudalism in 1861.
Nicholas died in 1855, shortly before the defeat of Russia during the Crimean War by a coalition consisting of Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire.
