1864 Five Kopek Coin

These substantial Russian 5 Kopek coins were issued in the name of Alexander II. Alexander II was known as a very liberal monarch, known to many as 'Alexander the Liberator' for his role in liberating the serfs in 1861, and giving Finland (then a Russian province) semi-autonomous status in 1863. However, he also crushed uprisings in Poland and Lithuania, and excluded them from reforms (including the introduction of trial by jury) which attempted to gingerly make Russia a more western country.
In spite of his liberal reforms, he was the subject of at least 4 assassination attempts, in 1866, 1879, 1880 and 1881. The latter one was successful, and the Tsar died of wounds inflicted by a bomb thrown by Narodnaya Volya, a member of the 'People's Will' terrorist group. Volya was also fatally wounded in the attack.
Alexander II's assassination brought a halt to the reforming trend in Russia, as Alexander III, the late tsar's heir, did not hold his father's liberal political views, and viewed his assassination as proof that the Russian people needed to be ruled with an iron hand.
