Debased Silver
The coin photographed is of the second coinage, of debased silver, 500 parts per 1000. Apart from the different alloy, both
obverse and reverse designs are usually described as similar to the first coinage types. The relief however is usually lower
than for the first coinage. This may be partly because the alloy is slightly harder.
Some discolouration or tarnishing can be seen on our coin. This is fairly common with lower silver content alloys.
Obverse:
Bare head of King George V, facing left.
The obverse inscription reads:
GEORGIUS V DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX
Reverse:
A crowned quartered shield within a garter bearing the inscription "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE".
The reverse legend reads:
FID DEF IND IMP HALF CROWN 19 21
