The Silver Jubilee Crown of George V - The First Ever Commemorative Crown
There were only two crown types issued during the reign of George V.
Oddly, there were none issued in 1911 for his Coronation, and the first issue was in 1927 as part of the modified coinage designs. This wreath type continued until 1936, and were only issued in small quantities.
In 1935, the first ever commemorative crown was issued to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of George V. This featured a new modernistic version of the famous St. George and Dragon reverse design.
Crowns had been a currently circulating coin, and had been produced regularly
until 1902, the first year of Edward VII's reign. No crowns intended for
circulation were issued in George V's reign. All years of the wreath issue were
of low mintage, the coins being produced mainly for collectors. Circulated
specimens are therefore not commonly available, and sell for relatively high
percentages of the price of mint condition specimens.
Obverse:
Bare head of George V facing left.
The engraver's
initials B.M. appear raised on the truncation of the neck.
GEORGIUS V D G BRITT OMN REX F D IND IMP
Reverse:
The reverse features, as described above, a modernised version of Pistrucci's famous St. George and the Dragon design. The engraver's initials K.G. appear near the letter W of crown. The reverse legend reads:
CROWN 1935
Edge
The edge is lettered:
DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI XXV
Rocking Horse Crown
This crown is often described as the "rocking horse" crown, because of the stylistic interpretation of St. George killing the dragon. We think this description is somewhat of an insult to the artist who created or engraved the design, which to us clearly evokes the spirit of the 1930's age in which it was produced.
