Awarded throughout the British Empire and Commonwealth to personel who served for at least 28 days in either the armed forces or the Merchant navy between September 1939 and September 1945. 250,000 of these where awarded to Australians. Mostly issued in cupro-nickel, those issued to Canadians where struck in 0.800 silver. This particular medal was issued to someone who served in the Australian military, and is therefore cupro-nickel.
