Nine or Ten Coins Issued?
1953 was the Coronation year of Elizabeth II, and although she acceded in 1952, 1953 was the first year any coins were issued bearing her portrait.
The ten denominations issued in 1953 were halfcrown, florin (two shillings) English shilling, Scottish shilling, sixpence, threepence, penny, halfpenny and farthing.

Official Coin Sets
Way back in 1953, the Royal Mint were not in the habit of issuing proof or uncirculated coin sets every year. It was not until 1970 that they started to issue coin sets every year for sale to collectors. For the coronation year there were two official sets issued, a ten coin proof set in a leatherette case, and sets of the nine circulation coins issued in a sealed plastic wallet. This was a kind of utility packaging, and they are not particularly attractive, also the plastic tends to split, and we do not normally resell them as "plastic sets".

Nine & Ten Coin Sets
We can offer sets of 9 or 10 coins in selected or near mint condition, packaged in an attractive blue card.

1953 Proof Sets Contain:
The ten pre-decimal coin types, halfcrown, florin (two shillings) English shilling, Scottish shilling, sixpence, threepence, penny, halfpenny and farthing, plus the coronation commemorative crown.
All attractively packaged in a specially produced leatherette case.

Specimen or Proof
Way back in 1953 the Royal Mint didn't call proof sets 'proof', they were called 'specimen' sets.
