Gold Medallion of Sir Winston Spencer Churchill, by Pinches for Seaby

One of Many
In 1965 a number of medallists produced medals or medallions of Sir Winston Churchill, in gold, silver or bronze.
The medal we feature on this page is by B.A. Seaby of London, for many years one of the leading UK coin dealers, before they were taken over by CNG (Classical Numismatic Group). It would have been part of a limited edition, although as we do not have the original certificate, we do not know the mintage.
This was a modified re-issue in gold (also silver and base metal) of a a Victory medal originally issued in 1945 but in base metal only.

Description
Obverse
This is a magnificent large medal with a left profile portrait of Churchill in very high relief. It is beautifully and impressively engraved, with Sir Winston wearing a collar and tie,
The word CHURCHILL appear to the right of the great man's head, and the date 1945, superimposed on a letter V for Victory.
Below the truncation of the neck is the engraver's name:
A. LOEWENTHAL
LINCOLN
And
OB. 24. JAN. 1965

Reverse
The reverse features a hand held aloft from a cloud, and bearing a flaming torch. There are two inscriptions, one at the sides of the torch:-
WE WILL FIGHT ON LAND ON SEA AND IN THE AIR UNTIL VICTORY IS WON.
The other inscription (legend) runs around the medal near the edge:-
UNFLINCHING INDOMITABLE HIS SPIRIT SAVE BRITAIN AND SO THE WORLD

The secondary (secondhand) market prices for silver medallions is usually quite competitively priced, and for connoisseurs of medallic or numismatic art, previously owned medallion sets often represent a bargain especially compared with the original new prices.
