The Queen's portrait on the coinage of the United Kingdom is one of the most visible and familiar symbols of the nation. It is therefore important that the Royal Effigy be regal and recognisable which is fulfilled in the four effigies that appear on the circulating coins of the Queen's reign. These have been brought together in The Crown Portrait Collection.

The First Portrait by Mary Gillick is a fresh and evocative portrait of the young Queen, approved for the coins of the new reign and was the first coin portrait of a Queen for more than half a century.

The second portrait by Arnold Machin was selected to to prepare a new portrait of the Queen in anticipation of the planned change to decimal coinage. He also chose to create a head and shoulder effigy, but this time with the Queen wearing the tiara which was a wedding present from her grandmother, Queen Mary.

The third portrait by Raphael Maklouf who, besides replacing the tiara with the Royal Diadem, wanted to create 'A more Traditional Portrait... a Symbol... Regal and Ageless'.

The new portrait by the sculpture and medalist Dan Rank-Broadley in 1998 is a more mature portrait of the Queen. He wanted a portrait which was 'Clearly Recognisable... Not Over-Idealised'.
