Commemorative Silver Crown Coin
In 1966, Spain issued a commemorative 100 peseta coin. This is an attractive small crown sized coin of 34 millimetres diameter. On the obverse it features a portrait of Franco, and the inscription FRANCISCO FRANCO CAUDILLO DE ESPANA POR LA G. DE DIOS * 1966 *
The reverse has a design representing the arms or badges of Spain quartered in eight tressures. These badges are as follows:-
Dates on Spanish Coins
Spain and a few other countries have at times used a strange dating system, where the main date shown on the coin is the date of its original release, but there is often also a "secret" date, smalller and much more difficult to read, usually incroporated into a part of the design as a privy mark. In the case of the 1966 100 Pesetas, the "other" date is incuse in the two stars at either side of the obverse legend below the portrait. Actual issue dates were 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970.
As British not Spanish dealers, we habitually look at the main date, and this is what we refer to, unless we quote the actual date in addition.
