1969 QE2's Maiden Voyage Medallion in Palladium
1969 palladium medallion issued to commemorate the maiden voyage of the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth II, by Slade Hampton & Son .
A large medallion by Slade Hampton & Son Limited of London, issued in palladium.
About the QEII
The QEII's own website states "The Queen Elizabeth 2, or QE2 as she is commonly known was the flagship of the Cunard Line for over 30 years. QE2 made her maiden voyage in 1969 and is one of the last great Transatlantic liners. At 70,327 tons and 963 feet long with a top speed of 32.5 knots she is also one of the largest and fastest passenger vessels afloat."
It omits the date of the maiden voyage, but from its "history" page, we find "22 Apr 1969 - Mini maiden voyage to Las Palmas; 2 May 1969 - Official maiden voyage to New York".
About the Medallion
This medallion is in a bold, rather minimalistic, modern style. On one side is a view of the right hand (starboard) side of the ship, with the legend (inscription):
RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH 2
CUNARD
On the other side is a large central "E2" monogram, with the legend:
MAIDEN VOYAGE
CUNARD
We believe the medallion was originally issued with a certificate which would probably have stated the maximum issue limit, but the single copy we have in stock is without its certificate, although it is in its original blue leather covered box of issue, with a Slade Hampton logo gold foil blocked on the inner lid.
There is a number "60" on the edge, although we could be reading it upside down, in which case it may be number "09"!
