1981 Coin Sets

Official Coinage of the Republic of Malta
Minted at the Franklin Mint, the coins illuminate the fascinating moments from the island nation's proud past by reflecting the story of civilisation itself.
The denominations were fifty cents, twenty-five cents, ten cents, five cents, two cents, one cent, five mils, three mils and two mils.
The fifty-cent commemorates the defeat of the Turkish invasion force in 1565, portraying The Great Siege Monument.
The decleration of Maltese Republic in 1974 is included in the nation's impressive national emblem which is shown on the twenty-five-cent coin.

The ten-cent coin reflects the reign of the Knight's of Malta featuring the Grand Master's Barge.

One of Malta's most prehistoric monuments, the flora altar which stood in the Temple of Hagar Qim is depicted on the five-cent coin.

The struggle Malta faced in the struggle for independence is symbolized in the helmeted head of Penthesilea, shown on the two-cent coin.

Depicted on the one-cent coin is the George Cross, Great Britain's tribute to the bravery of the Maltese people during world war II.

An earthen lamp, used by most Maltese families, appears on the five-mils coin.

A bee and honeycomb are shown on the three-mils coin. It symbolizes the fact that honey was used as currency in ancient Malta. Many people also believe that the name "Malta" was derived from the greek word for honey.

Last but not least the famed Maltese Cross which was originally worn as a heraldic emblem by the knights of Malta is portrayed on the two-mils coin.
