Gold Sovereigns
Unfortunately, there were no ordinary uncirculated sovereigns issued in 1986, only proofs.

Proof Sovereigns
Proofs are specially struck coins, with a highly polished mirror finished background, and the raised design in contrasting matt finish. They are issued as limited editions, and are more expensive than the ordinary uncirculated version.
1986 proof sovereigns are contained in a plastic capsule within a Royal Mint leather box, and are accompanied by a certificate.
They are unnecessarily good for use in jewellery, which would ruin their special finish in a very short space of time, but they are ideal for the person who would prefer to keep them as a memento or family heirloom.
We can also supply ring and pendant mounts for them, for those who like to wear their coins in jewellery. Sovereign pendants can be worn by men or women, sovereign rings are quite large and are more suitable for larger mens hands.

Half Sovereigns
Half sovereigns are less expensive than sovereigns, and make are a more suitable size for use in rings, as sovereign rings are too large for many people.
In 1986, there were no ordinary uncirculated half sovereigns issued, but a proof version was issued, and we permanently keep a few in stock for immediate delivery.

Krugerrands
Although we don't get asked for krugers as frequently as sovereigns, they are a suitable and unusual alternative.
They are available for 1986, and we also sometimes have fractional sizes of krugerrands available for 1986.
The four sizes of krugerrand are:-

In 1986, the Royal Mint issued a 3 coin gold proof sovereign set. These consist of £5, sovereign and half sovereign.
They were struck as a limited edition, but we often have one in stock. They make a very special gift, and naturally are quite expensive.

Two Pound Coins
1986 saw the introduction of a new British £2 coin, commemorating the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. These were issued in base metal (nickel-brass), silver, and gold versions. More about them on our 1986 Two Pounds page.
