In 1987 The Royal Mint issued a silver medal to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the revival of the order of the thistle on 29th May 1687.

According to the certificate that accompanies the medal:
'...King James VII of Scotland issued a warrant reviving the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle. The Order consists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights, all Scotsmen of outstanding attainment.Since that date more than two hundred men who either at home or overseas have rendered distinguished service in a civil or military capacity have been appointed Knights to what is a most exclusive Order and is Scotland's proudest accolade.

The design was prepared by Jeffery Matthews and modelled by Royal Mint engraver Robery Lowe.
