1995 National Trust Silver Centenary Medallion

A silver medallion issued to mark the 100th Anniversary of the foundation of the National Trust with a box and certificate produced by the Royal Mint.
A limited edition of 2,500 medallions were produced.

The National Trust was founded on 12th January 1895 by Octovia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley. The purposes and powers of the National Trust were set out in legislation by an Act of Parliament in 1907. The Trust was to hold places of natural beauty or historic interest in permanent preservation for the for the benefit of the nation. Once land owned by the trust has been declared inalienable it cannot be sold, mortgaged, developed or acquired by anybody except with parliament's express consent.
Over the one hundred years, the National Trust has grown into one of Europe's most active conservation organisation and today looks after 580,000 acres of beautiful countryside in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as 534 miles of coast, 230 historic houses, 130 fine gardens and much more.

Obverse
The legend reads:
THE NATIONAL TRUST
1895-1995
The reverse holds beautifully detailed pictures of the broad range of concerns that the National Trust have in its care.

Reverse
The reverse shows the coat of arms of the Royal Mint in Llantrisant.
Legend reads:
ROYAL MINT
CENTENARY MEDAL
It would appear that the Royal Mint designed this to be used as a common reverse design for a wide range of commercially produced medals, thus enabling companies or individuals to reduce their tooling costs.
