Hong Kong
Hong Kong came under British control in 1842, and first produced its own coins in 1863. It has long been the leading commercial centre in the region. In July 1st. 1997, Hong Kong was returned to the control or the People's Republic of China as a Special Administrative Region. A special "farewell" set of coins was issued for this occasion by the Hong Kong monetary authority.

Farewell Coin Sets 1997
The farewell set consists of seven coins, in the same denominations as the previous circulation issues, except for the special commemorative designs on their reverse. The obverse of each bears the traditional Bauhinia flower design with the words "Hong Kong" in English and Chinese. The reverse shows the value or denomination in Arabic numerals, Chinese and English words. The specification of the coins, and their reverse designs are as follows:-

50¢22.501997 the year of the Ox, a sacred and powerful animal which signifies the coming of Spring and a new beginning.
20¢19.00Two butterfly kites, with their tails knotted together, the butterfly being the symbol of joy and conjugal felicity.
10¢17.50A traditional Chinese sailing junk with a high poop, overhanging stern and three masts, sailing on a calm sea with a following wind.
