Introduced in 1997 following the success of the gold Britannia, the Royal Mint produced set of four silver Britannia coins, one each in the four weights previously produced in gold, namely 1 ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce, with face values of two pounds (£2), one pound, fifty pence, and twenty pence.
Silver Britannias are, quite appropriately, struck in Britannia silver, which is 958 parts per thousand silver, instead of the more usual sterling silver of 925 parts per thousand. Many other world silver coins, particularly those of American influence are struck in only 900 silver, although some of the modern silver "bullion" coins are produced in fine silver, usually 999.

Swing Low Sweet Chariot
Although the design on the reverse of the gold Britannias had been a standing Britannia from their introduction in 1987 until 1996, for the tenth anniversary a new design was produced, a figure of Britannia driving a chariot, in the manner of Boudicca or Boudicea. We think this is a very attractive design which works well in both gold and silver. Originally both gold and silver versions were available in proof only, but we notice that the Royal Mint released a bullion (uncirculated) version of the one ounce gold coin in late 2003, but it was only available as part of a gold bullion type set.
No bullion version of the 1997 silver coins have ever been issued. It is only available in a proof version. These were issued in complete sets of four coins, and also single one ounce and tenth ounce coins.

Third Portrait
The 1997 Britannias use the third portrait of the Queen, all later issues have the fourth portrait.

Bullion Chariots
Just to confuse things, the Royal Mint issued a bullion (non-proof) version of the silver Chariot Britannia in 1999, in the one ounce size only.
