The Order of St. John

The Order of St. John has its roots in a hospice which was founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century. It is the oldest order of chivalry in existance today.

Obverse
The obverse of the medallion was designed by Royal Mint engraver, Matthew Bonaccorsi. It shows St. John Hospitaller helping a wounded knight.

Reverse
The reverse is a shield bearing various heraldic beasts, presumably symbolising the Royal Mint, with the legend:- ROYAL MINT
CENTENARY MEDAL
