The Pobjoy Mint have produced this coin on behalf of the Seychelles to celebrate to election of Pope Francis I. The previous Pope, Benedict XVI, stepped down after announcing his ill health.
The overse of the coin shows the coat of arms of the Seychelles. The reverse of the coin shows a side profile of Pope Francis I surrounded by rosary beads and the stations of the cross. St. Francis of Assisi started the tradition of moving around the stationss of the cross to commemorate Jesus Christ carrying the cross to His cruxifiction. It is therefore quite fitting that this surrounds Pope Francis I portrait as this is the saint he chose to be named after.
