Prince George's 1st Birthday £5 Crown

The Royal Mint have issued a £5 crown to celebrate Prince George's 1st Birthday. This is the third £5 crown to honour Prince George, with the 2013 Royal Birth Crown and the 2013 Royal Christening Crown.

Prince George

His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge was born on 22nd July, 2013.  It is the first time in 120 years - and only the second time it has ever happened - that the reigning monarch has welcomed a great-grandchild who is destined to succeed the throne.

The Royal Family will be celebrating the event privately at Kensington Palace. His father, Prince William, spent his first birthday also at Kensington Palace. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were visiting Scotland for their annual summer visit, but Prince Charles and Camilla did phone to wish him a happy birthday.

Design

Reverse

The reverse design is a cruciform version of the Royal Arms - a design that has only appeared on coins twice before. Reserved for important occasions, the design was featured on the Queen's Coronation Crown in 1953 and the New York Exhibition Crown in 1960. Though each member of the Royal Family has his or her own coat of arms, the Royal Arms represent the whole Royal Family.

Obverse

The obverse reverts back to the fourth portrait of the Queen designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, and introduced in 1998.
ELIZABETH II D G REG F D

When we received the coins we noticed the obverse was unlike the one advertised - which had "2014" on it. We were surprised to find it was different, and have contacted the Royal Mint to find out whether their photograph is wrong, the design has changed, or if it is a mule.

In Stock Now

We have received our first delivery of Royal Birthday coins - they are in stock now for immediate delivery at a discount on The Royal Mint issue price.

With a mintage of 7,500 we think these coins will not be in stock very long. We have noticed that as of 18th July, 2014, the Royal Mint are no longer offering the coin for sale on their site - possibly as it has sold out.

Update 22nd July, 2014

Wow! Demand from our latest mailshot has meant we have sold out of our current stock - on Prince George's birthday! We have ordered some more and they will be with us soon. If you would like to place an order, please do so, as it is unlikely that after our next shipment we will be able to get any more.
