Australia Perth Mint 2016 Bullion Coin Program
The 2016 koala features a koala walking on a tree branch on the reverse. The design on the koala coins changes each year, making them appealing to both collectors and investors.
The obverse has Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The coins are struck in 99.9% fine silver and are Australian legal tender.
In recent years the koalas have been issued in four sizes; half ounce, one ounce, ten ounce and one kilo. The 2016 koalas will only be available in one ounce and one kilo. We do not yet know why the Perth Mint have stopped the half ounce or ten ounce coins, or whether they intend to replace it with another design.
The 2016 one kilo koala has a different finish compared to the half or one ounce coins. It has a matte finish, like that used on the Australian crocodile coin. The half ounce and one ounce coins still have a proof-like finish which we have come to expect from the Perth Mint.
Koalas
Whilst koalas are often referred to as 'koala bears', they are in fact marsupials. Their young are born undedeveloped and mature within the safety of their mothers pouch. Their correct name is simply 'koalas'.
Although they have an image of being cute and cuddly, as with most wild animals, koalas can be fierce if disturbed or provoked.
One Ounce Silver Bullion Coins
The Perth Mint issued their first bullion coin - the Kookaburra - in 1990. In 2007, the Perth Mint decided to add to their bullion collection, by introducing the silver koalas.
Initially koalas were only produced in a one ounce version. In 2012 the Perth Mint added three new sizes (half ounce, ten ounce and one kilo). In 2016 the half ounce and ten ounce coins stopped being produced.
Mintage
There will be 300,000 one ounce coins produced, whilst the one kilo coins will be produced on a 'mint to order' basis.
