Brief Argentinian History
Argentina was discovered in 1516 by the Spanish navigator Juan De Solis. A permanent Spanish Colony was established at Buenos Aires in 1580. When Napoleon conquered Spain, the Argentines set up their own government on May 25th, 1810 and independence was formally declared on July 9th, 1816.
Buenos Aires - Buenos Ayres
The city of Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city in Argentina. It was also, until the capital of the province of Buenos Aires. From 1822 to 1861 the province issued coins in its own name, as can be seen from our featured coin, a 10 Decimos of 1830, which was almost certainly made at the Soho Mint in Birmingham England.
