Roman Republic Denarius (Moneyer, Balbus) |

Featured is a coin of the Roman Republic issued in 105 BC by the Moneyer L. Thorius Balbus. When this coin was issued, the Jurguthine War against Numidia was raging, and Marius was the dominant figure in Rome. Two years earlier, Marius had initiated a major reform of the Roman Army, turning the army away from a part time force of citizen-soldiers into a professional army of disenfranchised plebians. This reform would eventually become a major factor in leading to the downfall of the Roman Republic later on.
