Julius Caesar
Caius Julius Caesar
17 July 100 BC - 1th March 44 BC
Reigned 49 - 44 BC

Julius Caesar was surely the most famous of all ancient Romans. Born into one of Rome's aristocratic families in 100 BC, he soon became a prominent figure. He was elected as Consul in 59 BC shortly after having formed what is known as the "first triumvirate" with Pompey and Crassus. This was a three-man power sharing arrangement. Rome still had a dislike for kings, and was yet to have its first emperor.
Julius Caesar spent much time on successful military campaigns, especially in Gaul. He visited Britain on two occasions, the first in 55 BC was almost a day trip. On the second the following year, he had some military success, but Britain was not absorbed into the Roman empire until later.
He defeated Pompey at Pharsalus in 48 BC, and spent the next two years eliminating the remnants of the Pompeian party.
On his return to Rome, he was the undisputed master of the Roman world, but before long, there followed a famous conspiracy against him, and he was assassinated on the Ides of March.

Featured is a coin of Julius Caesar, depicting an elephant trampling a serpent, with Caesar's name underneath, symbolising the triumph of good over evil and his conquest of Gaul. The reverse depicts the regalia of the office of Pontifex Maximus (Chief Priest), which was held by Julius Caesar at the time. This is one of the most famous Roman coin types and is highly sought after by collectors as a result.
