Silver Denarius of the Roman Republic Struck by MF Cestianus 67 B.C.
Featured is a Republican Denarius struck by Cestianus, who was also a curile aedile at the time, hence the curule chair on the reverse. The deity depicted on the obverse is Cybele, a goddess roughly comparible with the greek goddess Gaia, the 'Earth Mother'. Cybele, as with many Roman gods and goddesses, was a foreign import, who originated in Phrygia, a kingdom in what is now Turkey. Partly because of her associations with fertility, her cult employed temple 'prostitutes' (who were often self-castrated males) to take part in drunken orgies with fellow worshippers as part of their religious rituals.
