Roman Republic Denarius (Moneyer, MF Cestianus) |

| |
Featured is a Roman Republican denarius struck by an unknown moneyer between 211 - 130 B.C. This classic design was used for nearly a century by the Romans, and was used during the period when Rome was struggling for supremacy with Carthage. The coin features a portrait of Roma on the obverse, with an 'X' behind her head (this was a mark of value, indicating that the denarius was worth 10 asses)*. Whilst on the reverse features the twins Castor and Pollux on horseback with couched lances.
*The denarius was worth 10 asses when first introduced in 211 B.C. In about 149 B.C. the denarius was re-tariffed at 16 asses. The 'X' dissappeared after that for about 8 years, whereupon it was re-instated briefly as a classic design feature of this coin type, rather than a mark of value.
