Obverse of Claudius II Tetradrachm
Claudius II

Reverse of Claudius II Tetradrachm
Eagle, LB (Year 2)

Claudius II 268 - 270 A.D.

Featured is a billon provincial tetradrachm (four drachm piece) of Claudius II, struck for circulation in the east. As with the antonianii struck in the central and western portions of the empire, the turmoil and crisis of this period resulted in the hyperinflation which reduced what had been a fine silver denomination to a much smaller coin with scarcely a token amount of silver within it.
