Oliver Cromwell
After the execution of Charles I in 1649 by beheading, coins were issued under the "Commonwealth of England". There was a political will to return to a monarchy, and many of his advisors wished Cromwell to accept the crown. Between 1656 and 1658, a number of denominations were struck bearing the portrait of Cromwell. These included:- Patterns?
It is believed by many that the Cromwell coins were intended only as patterns for an intended coinage, and were never issued for circulation. This could be supported by the rarity of all Cromwell portrait coins, but there are historical references to Cromwell coin being very worn, and therefore it appears that a small number were issued for circulation, and did in fact circulate for a number of years. All Cromwell coins are difficult to find in any condition, and their prices reflect this.
