Brilliance in Diamonds
Brilliance
Before we discuss brilliance in diamonds, it might help to give a few dictionary definitions.
- The state or quality of being brilliant, as:
- Extreme brightness.
- Exceptional clarity and agility of intellect or invention.
- Splendor; magnificence. Music. Sharpness and clarity of tone.
And from a thesaurus:
- Exceptional brightness and clarity, as of a cut and polished stone: brilliancy, fire, luminosity, radiance. See light/darkness.
- Liveliness and vivacity of imagination: brilliancy, fire, genius, inspiration. See good/bad.
- Brilliant, showy splendor: brilliancy, glitter, glory, gorgeousness, magnificence, resplendence, resplendency, sparkle, sumptuousness. Informal glitz. See beautiful/ugly.
Brilliance as a Desirable Diamond Attribute
Brightness, clarity, splendour, magnificence, sharpness, vivacity, liveliness are all mentioned, and are all highly desirable aspects of a diamond's brilliance. These should not be confused with its fire or dispersion, which is really a separate aspect.
What Makes for Brilliance?
Clarity (lack of inclusions), and well-proportioned cutting and polishing are the two main factors which explain and account for brilliance in diamonds. Much research has been done in the last century to understand, define, measure, and optimise brilliance of facetted diamonds. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has undertaken much study. We noted on its website:-
- GIA presented the first results from its diamond cut research in the Fall 1998 issue of Gems & Gemology (“Modeling the Appearance of the Round Brilliant Cut Diamond: An Analysis of Brilliance”). That article described how researchers used computer modeling to “trace” light rays through a virtual round brilliant diamond, allowing them to calculate a brilliance metric called weighted light return (WLR).
