A Brief History
Djibouti (Jibuti, Somali: Jabuuti), officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south, and Somalia in the southeast. The remainder of the border is formed by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. On the other side of the Red Sea, on the Arabian Peninsula, 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the coast of Djibouti, is Yemen. Djibouti's size is just over 23,000 square kilometres (8,900 square miles) with an estimated population of under 500,000. Its capital is the city of Djibouti.
Djibouti Coins
We tend to see very few coins of Djibouti, partly because of its small population, and therefore low mintages.
The coin pictured is a silver proof coin marketed as part of a collection of "Ships and Explorers".
Description
Obverse
The coat of arms of the Republic of Djibouti, introduced after attaining independence on 27 June 1977. It is bordered on the sides with laurel branches. Within this perimeter there is a vertical spear, in front of which is a shield. Underneath the shield, two hands rise away from the spear, which both carry a large knife. These two hands symbolize the main two ethnic groups of the nation: the ethnic group Afar and the ethnic group Issa.
The legend reads:
REPUBLIQUE DE DJIBOUTI
Reverse
A 17th century frigate (sailing ship) in full sail, with a representation of the Djiboutian flag in an exergue formed by waves, with the legend:
FREGATE BATEAU A VOILE DU 17e SIECLE
100 DJF
Certificate
The coin we have is accompanied by a so-called certificate, printed on rather cheap looking recycled paper, which is anonymous, except for a portcullis.
This document does contain some interesting information about the design, although it does disagree with us (and Krause) about which is the obverse and which is the reverse:-(Sounds to us as if they had trouble with pirates in those days, too!)
The obverse represents a frigate in all its full-rigged glory. A durable sailing ship for more than two centuries, the frigate was a three-mast, slimline craft that could put to sea armed to the gunwhales, whilst still retaining the speed to race nimbly toward or away from hostilities.
