Domitian 81 - 96 A.D.

Domitian was the son of Vespasian and the younger brother of Titus. However, he made himself very unpopular with the rest of the ruling elite, particularly the Senate and he was murdered in 96 A.D. whereupon he was subjected to the Damnatio Memoriae. Contemporary historians also took the view that he was a tyrant who got what he deserved, but modern historians tend to take the view that he was in fact an efficient if somewhat ruthless ruler who ended up alienating too many powerful people and that this led to his downfall.

The featured coin is a rare bronze coin minted in Antioch for local circulation.
