Domitian Obv
Obverse of Domitian Denarius

Domitian Rev
Reverse of Domitian Denarius

Domitian 81 - 96 A.D.

Featured is silver denarius of Domitian, son of Vespasian and younger brother of Titus. Domitian was not a particularly popular Emperor with upper class Romans, particularly the Senate, mostly on account of his ruthlessness when dealing with political opponents. He was assassinated in 96, and subject to the Damnatio Memoriae, whereby efforts were made to eradicate all trace of Domitian's existance on public monuments and documents. Many of Domitian's coins would also have been melted down and restruck in the name of the new Emperor. Domitian's reputation amongst contemporary ancient historians was heavily influenced by the upper class view of him, but some modern historians view his bad reputation as tainted with bias, and suggest that he was an efficient and competant Emperor who had simply alienated too many powerful people.
The Obverse features a portrait of the Emperor Domitian, and the Reverse Minerva holding a spear (Sear reference #895).
