French Coins

Brief French History
France was first recognised as an entity by the Romans who knew it as Gallia or Gaul. The name France comes from the Frankia, a Germanic tribe who invaded in the fifth century during the fall of the Roman Empire. In pre-Roman days, Celtic tribes issued coins in various parts of France. France rose to a major power in the seventeenth century, and still wields some influence in many areas of the world which formed parts of its former empire, and the French language is still in use in many of these former outposts. The French Revolution in 1789 shook much of Europe and also influenced the nascent north America.
France has also been a major leader in the EEC, now the EU.

French Coins
Coins have been issued in and for France since Celtic times, throughout the Roman occupation, and ever since, although various parts of France were at times owned by various kings, princes and dukes.
France has in its history produced a rich variety of coins in gold, silver, copper, bronze, other base metals, and platinum. The Paris Mint make coins for a number of other countries, and also produce ranges of collectors coins.
