Gallienus 253 - 268 A.D.

Gallienus was the eldest son of Valerian. He was appointed Caesar to his Father's Augustus in 253, and reigned alongside him for seven years, until in 260, Valerian suffered the ignomy of being captured by the Persians. Gallienus ruled alone from then on, and made little attempt to avenge his father's capture in part because he had more pressing issues to contend with, including barbarian invasion and rebellion against his rule.
In 260, one of Gallienus' generals, Postumus, rebelled and declared himself the Emperor of the Gallic Empire, which consisted of the provinces of Hispania, Gaul and Britannia, killing Gallienus' son Saloninus in the process. Gallienus made a half-hearted attempt at reconquering the lost western provinces, but abandoned the campaign when he was wounded in a skirmish with Postumus' troops in 265.
In the East meanwhile, there was almost constant rebellion. Odanthus, Gallienus' ally kept these rebellions in check, but when he and his son were murdered in 267, his widow Zenobia declared independence from Rome and ran an independent Empire known as the Palmyrene Empire. Gallienus was at war with barbarians and/or usurpers during the entirety of his sole reign, and his reign was ended during a siege of yet another usurper, Aureleous, at Milan, when he was assassinated in a plot involving the future Emperors Claudius II and Aurelian. It would be left to these two men to complete the job of reuniting the Empire and restoring some semblance of order and stability.
