Another Godless Coin Outcry!
The news about the recent Godless coin is not the first time there has been publicity about "Godless" coins. During discussion about the designs of the new Presidential dollar series, there was criticism that "God" was being relegated from the front or back of the coins to the edge, sidelined as it were. The production error in which the edge lettering has been omitted, will give critics more ammunition.
In 1861, there began a movement in the USA to acknowledge God on the US coinage. From 1864, this was done on most new designs, first appearing on the new two cent coin.
From 1883 to 1937 inclusive, the wording disappeared from the five cent coin (nickel), but re-appeared in 1938. It was also absent one one cent coins until 1909, and on the ten cent coin (dime) from 1916.

Earlier Still!
In 1849 and 1849, when new "one tenth of a pound" decimal coins, actually florins or two shilling pieces, were introduced in the United Kingdom, there was considerable and vocal criticism because the Latin "Dei Gratia" (by the grace of God) had been omitted from the legend. When a modified design was re-introduced in 1851, the relevant wording had been reinstated. The 1848 and 1849 issues are known as "Godless" florins, sometimes as "Godless and Graceless".
