Featured is an Alexandrian bronze hemidrachm of Hadrian, famous chiefly (in the English speaking world at least) for the wall in Northern England bearing his name. This coin was struck in Alexandria for circulation in Roman Egypt. The Obverse features a potrait of the Emperor, and the Reverse features Isis, an Ancient Egyptian goddess who was adopted by the Romans. She was a major deity whose patronage extended to many things, including magic, simplicity, motherhood and fertility. The latter of which meant that she was closely associated with Cybele, a Phrygian fertility goddess who had also been adopted into the Roman Pantheon.
The letters 'IH' in front of Isis' face stand for '18', the regnal year of Hadrian corresponding to 133/34 A.D. in our calendar.
The obverse legend reads AYT KAIC TPAIAN AΔPIANOC CEB.
