Hadrian 117 - 138 A.D. Tetradrachm

Featured is an Alexandrian billon tetradrachm of Hadrian, famous chiefly for the wall in Northern England bearing his name, struck in Alexandria for circulation in the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. The Obverse features a potrait of the Emperor, and the Reverse features Pronoia, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Foresight. The letters 'KB' are Greek numerals for the number 22, indicating that this was struck in the final year of his reign, some time between 137 - 138 A.D. Hadrian had been suffering from extremely poor health for several years before this, and had been lingering all the while. It has been said that the suffering caused by his final illness caused him to attempt suicide on several occasions before he finally succumbed to death by (presumably) natural causes.
