Brief Madagascan History
According to the CIA:

Formerly an independent kingdom, Madagascar became a French colony in 1896, but regained its independence in 1960. During 1992-93, free presidential and National Assembly elections were held, ending 17 years of single-party rule. In 1997, in the second presidential race, Didier RATSIRAKA, the leader during the 1970s and 1980s, was returned to the presidency. The 2001 presidential election was contested between the followers of Didier RATSIRAKA and Marc RAVALOMANANA, nearly causing secession of half of the country. In April 2002, the High Constitutional Court announced RAVALOMANANA the winner.
According to Wikipedia:
Madagascar, or Republic of Madagascar (older name Malagasy Republic), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. The main island, also called Madagascar, is the fourth largest island in the world, and is home to five percent of the world's plant and animal species, more than 80 percent of which are indigenous to Madagascar. Most notable are the lemur infraorder of primates, the carnivorous fossa, three endemic bird families and six endemic baobab species.
The adjective for Madagascar is Malagasy (not Madagascan), and the national language is the Malagasy language.
Madagascar Coins
The first coins issued in the name of Madagascar appear to have been as a French Colony in 1943, these issues continued spasmodically until 1953. All denominations were in francs.
With independence in 1965, new coins were issued in the name of the Malagasy Republic, until 1989. These are dual denominated in francs and ariary.
From 1978, further new coin designs were issued, denominated in ariary, under the Democratic Republic of Madagascar (or Malagasy), and these continued until 1992.
From 1996, the word "Democratic" was dropped, and coins issued in the name of the Republic of Madagascar.

1978 Two Coin Silver Proof Set
In 1978, The British Royal Mint issued a two-coin silver proof set, which we showcase here. It contains a 20 Ariary, and 10 Ariary coin, new denominations chosen to reflect local greater influence and reduced French influence in the affairs of the country, and marks a shift out of the French Franc zone.
