Model Coins & Other Imitation Coinage
It is quite common to come across small coin-like objects. Most people finding these, in an old drawer, or perhaps with an old collection or accumulation of coins, assume that they have made a very valuable find, especially if they can see no mention of them in coin catalogues. These are often imitation coins made for a variety of reasons, some of which may have become lost in the mists of time.
Many of these "coins" are self explanatory, because they state in their inscriptions "model coinage", "imitation sovereign", "toy money", or some such revealing remark. This should fully explain what they are, but it still surprises us that people will come and ask us what it is that they have found. Perhaps they just need new spectacles! As a public service, we have pleasure in providing this and a number of linked pages, each describing one or more of these interesting pieces. We hope you will find these pages useful. Please note that these items are quite common and are worth very little.
