In the second half of the nineteenth century, it became very fashionable to wear a pocket watch on an "Albert" chain. Many watch chains were double ended, and on the other end there would be a watch key, a sovereign purse, a seal or a gold coin. Sometimes a gold coin would be worn suspended on a short central section.
Numerous coins still survive from those days. Usually the mount was individually hand made in a scroll design, and was soldered directly onto the coin, as in our photograph.
