Temple of Janus on a Sestertius

Nero 54 - 68 A.D.

Featured is a coin of Nero, son of the incestuous murderess Agrippina, sister of Caligula and wife of Claudius. Agrippina poisoned Claudius so that her son could be raised to the purple ahead of Claudius' own son Britannicus before he came of age. Later, Nero murdered his own mother to rid himself of her suffocating influence. Nero ruled for 14 years, during which most of Rome was destroyed in a fire, for which Christians were blamed and persecuted without mercy. Nero's attempt to rebuild Rome in the most splendid manner possible taxed his subjects beyond their endurance and he was deposed and compelled to commit suicide in 68 A.D.

Featured is a copper as (or assarius) of Nero with a depiction of a winged Victory on the Reverse. The shield has the letters 'SPQR' (Senatus Populusque Romanus or 'Senate and People of Rome') upon it, in addition to the usual 'SC' (Senatus Consulto, or 'Decree of the Senate) letters featured on most base metal issue Roman coins of this period.
