Featured is a coin of Nero, son of the incestuous murderess Agrippina, sister of Caligula and wife of Claudius. Agrippina poisoned Claudius so that her son could be raised to the purple ahead of Claudius' own son Britannicus before he came of age. Later, Nero murdered his own mother to rid himself of her suffocating influence. Nero ruled for 14 years, during which most of Rome was destroyed in a fire, for which Christians were blamed and persecuted without mercy. Nero's attempt to rebuild Rome in the most splendid manner possible taxed his subjects beyond their endurance and he was deposed and compelled to commit suicide in 68 A.D.
Featured is a gold aureus of Nero. The Roman Goddess of health and prosperity, Salus is featured on the reverse. Given the heavy taxes levied on the roman population that reduced many to poverty in order to rebuild Rome after the fire, this is perhaps another case of ironic propoganda featured on a Roman coin.
