Numerian
282 - 284 AD
Numerian was the son of the Emperor Carus, and the brother of Carinus. He was raised to the rank of Augustus along with his brother when his father died in 283, ruling the east whilst his brother and co-Augustus ruled the West. Numerian died mysteriously in 284, but his death was kept secret for several days until the smell emanating from the imperial litter became too overpowering to keep up the charade.
Diocles, one of the army's senior offices, accused the Praetorian Prefect, Aper, of murdering Numerian and slayed him on the spot. Diocles was subsequently proclaimed Emperor and changed his name to Diocletian.

The two Gs in 'AVGG' is a reference to the fact that there were two official Augustii ruling at the same time. Coins of Numerian are quite scarce compared to other Emperors of this time, such as Probus and Aurelian.
