Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902)

Born in Canterbury, Cooper showed early artistic inclinations as a child. At the age of 20 he became a student of the Royal Academy. In 1827, Cooper travelled to Brussels, where he was to be married. Due to the Belgian revolution Cooper moved back to London, where he exhibited in the Royal Academy from 1833-1902, a record continuous exhibit. A great philanthropist in Canterbury, Cooper used some of his wealth to build almshouses (charitable housing) for the poor in Chantry Lane. In 1882 Cooper developed an art school in Canterbury and is now known as the University of Creative Arts. Cooper is regarded as one of the foremost animal painters of the Victorian period. He specialised in cattle.
