Antoninanii
Portrait of Probus on and Antoninianus
Antoninanii
Reverse featuring Sol Invicto
Probus
276 - 282

Featured is an Antoninanus of the Emperor Probus. The speciman shown is particularly impressive because it has retained most of its original silvering. The hole at the top may be contemporary as the Romans often used to pierce coins for use as an amulet for wearing or as a talisman nailed to the door for good luck. The diety 'Sol Invicto' (Unconquered Sun) was a popular cult god in Rome at this time. Notice the radiate Crown he is wearing, which is similar to the radiate crown worn by Probus on the obverse, and indeed on all imperial busts on the Antoninanii of the various emperors from Caracalla to Diocletian. The Emperor's wish to be identified as an incarnation of an 'unconquerable' god was perhaps wishful thinking, particularly for Probus, who was usurped and murded by his own soldiers at the instigation of his successor, Carus in 282.
