Antoninanii
Portrait of Probus
Antoninanii
'CLEMENTIA TEMP'
Probus
276 - 282

Featured is an Antoninanus of the Emperor Probus, one of the many military emperors of the third century crisis who violently deposed his rival before assuming the purple for himself, and was then in turn deposed and murdered by his own soldiers whilst on campaign. His reign of six years was however, quite long by the standards of the time, and his coins are quite plentiful as a result.

The featured coin shows the legend 'CLEMENTIA (goddess of mercy) TEMP' and a depiction of the emperor receiving the globe from Jupiter. The intended message from this is that the Roman Empire is being restored to a state of peace under the rule of the Emperor. However, as with much of the optimistic propaganda on Roman coins of this period, it was more of an aspiration than a boast. The coin retains most of its original silvering.
