Antoninanii
Portrait of Probus on Antoninanii
Antoninanii
Reverse featuring Sol Invicto
Probus
276 - 282

Featured is an Antoninanus of the Emperor Probus. As with most Emperors of the Third Century crisis, Probus did not die a natural death and was murdered by his own troops in 282. He had however, survived longer than many of the Emperors of this period, due to his successes as a military leader. Unfortunately, the soldiers under his command took the view that he was pushing them too hard towards the end of his reign, and had decided to support the rebel Carus instead.

The featured coin reverse refers to Salus, the Roman Goddess of welfare and the public good.
