Royal Mint Issue Silver Dishes
To mark the anniversaries of the introduction of the Britannia Silver Standard, and of the cartwheel penny, in 1997 the Royal Mint commissioned the silversmith Christopher Lawrence to create a hallmarked Britannia silver dish incorporating the cartwheel penny. Each dish has a electrotype replica cartwheel penny, set in the centre of the dish above six sailing ships. Only 400 hundred of these dishes were made, 200 showing the obverse, and 200 showing the reverse. Each dish is presented in a leather bound box with a Royal Mint certificate.
When we see these advertised for sale elsewhere, we notice that the sellers
almost always omit mentioning that the "coin" in the dish is actually a
replica as stated on the Royal Mint certificate which accompanies it. We
believe this is fraudulent, the sellers probably think it is smart
salesmanship.
